Interesting take on space travel - open source could really speed up innovation and reduce costs. Looking forward to seeing this project progress!

Totally agree with you, mgarvin. We've seen open source revolutionize software development and there's no reason it can't do the same for space travel.

Anon, I understand your concern but think of all the brilliant minds contributing to this. There's an opportunity for a collective intelligence to tackle problems that might not be possible otherwise.

I don't think open source is a good fit for space travel, there's too much at risk. Better to keep this in the hands of experienced professionals and controlled organizations.

I see both sides of this argument and can't wait to see how things unfold. Maybe there's a middle ground where experts can take community input and apply it in a responsible way?

Very excited to contribute to this project! I'll be releasing a design for a reusable spacecraft on GitHub this weekend. Would love some feedback on it.

Awesome, kevinm! I'll make sure to check it out and provide any feedback I can. There's no way we can do this alone so contributions like yours are crucial.

That's cool, kevinm! I'm personally focused on space suit research but happy to check out your work and discuss best practices.

Open source has its merits but we should also consider that government organizations, like NASA, have years of accumulated knowledge. Collaboration could yield some significant results.

^ +1 for collaboration. If we can create a secure way for agencies and the open source community to share ideas, I think we can revolutionize space travel.

I'm new to the HN community and this is my first encounter with an open-source space project. Can anyone recommend resources or tutorials on where I should get started?

@astro954 check out GitHub for existing projects and forums like StackExchange for getting help as you go along. Everyone is friendly and more than happy to assist!

This could really help address the unsustainable growth of debris in orbit. An open-source ADR (active debris removal) platform could both lower costs and foster innovation.

Agreed, devondev! It's amazing what the open-source community can achieve when they come together. Let's hope this sparks some interesting ideas! :)

It's great that this conversation is moving in such a positive direction. Let's keep pushing the boundaries of what's possible and make space accessible to everyone!
