Specific technical skills include: strong understanding of networking protocols, experience in cryptography, familiarity with scripting languages like Python and Bash, and experience with cloud platforms.

Do candidates need experience working with any specific tools or software? Anything that's a must-have?

@user987878, we do not have a strict list of must-have tools since researchers may have their preferences. Candidates should, however, be familiar with network analysis tools like Wireshark, a wide set of security penetration testing tools like Metasploit, Burp Suite, and Cain & Abel, and should be comfortable with virtualization software such as VirtualBox or VMWare. Experience with IDS and IPS such as Bro, Snort, Suricata, and Sourcefire is a plus.
