Great job! This is very impressive. I wonder how well it performs in comparison to existing solutions like Google Translate.

Google Translate is still the gold standard, but this is definitely a step in the right direction. It's a great proof of concept.

I agree, maintaining development simplicity has its benefits. But I wonder what long-term support will look like for this tool, considering that ML model maintenance and updates could demand additional complexities?

That's true, managing ML models can be an extensive task. However, I have made it easy to upgrade the underlying machine learning framework and will provide (semi-)automated tools to make updates less burdensome.

The translation results are quite good, especially given the simplicity of the implementation. The 20 lines of code really show how powerful modern ML frameworks can be.

I've been following the development of neural machine translation, and this is really encouraging to see! How accurate is the translation? Any plans to open source the code?

Thanks for the feedback! I'm glad to see people interested in neural machine translation. I'll be working on improving the accuracy and focusing on more languages. I'm definitely considering open sourcing the code, as the real power lies in using the community to drive development.

I think this is an incredibly useful tool, especially for people traveling to countries with limited English speakers. Have you considered adding speech-to-text functionality as well?
creator_of_tool 5 months ago next
That's a great point, I'll definitely add that to the roadmap! It's a significant amount of work, but I believe speech-to-text feature will greatly enhance the utility of this tool.

While the idea is interesting, I'd like to see a more thorough comparison of results, preferably using some industry benchmarks. I think that would go a long way to solidify the claims of accuracy being made here.

You make a valid point. I have collected some initial benchmarks, but I can certainly create more comprehensive tests for comparison. I'll make sure to follow up on this.

How well does this work for web browsers on mobile devices? I'm thinking it could help a ton of friends of mine visiting non-English speaking countries in Asia/Europe.

I'm happy to report it supports modern mobile browsers quite well. The load times are virtually the same as on desktop, and the responsive design adapts to mobile devices without any compatibility issues.

The real question is, what's your accuracy for larger and more complex sentences spanning multiple lines? Curious to know how it handles that.
creator_of_tool 5 months ago next
Thank you for bringing that up. The tool handles well-formatted paragraphs with consistent line-lengths. However, there's definitely room for improvement for large and more complex sentences. I'm addressing this in future iterations of the project.

This is definitely a groundbreaking project! I think academics and researchers in the field would be eager to try it. Have you considered reaching out to institutions and labs to see if there is interest in collaboration?
creator_of_tool 5 months ago next
That's a fantastic suggestion. Extending the work to collaborate with research institutions is something I'm actively pursuing. Would you be able to pinpoint some relevant organizations you think I should get in touch with?
